What Does a 54% Gain in the "AI Crypto Sector" Mean, and Who Decides Which Tokens Are in It?
Grayscale said its AI crypto sector rose 54% in September while the market rose 24%. Here is how a classification provider sets a sector's membership, why a small basket produces large percentages, and where a number like this stops being useful.
A 54% gain in the "AI sector" means that a basket of tokens rose by that much, where a provider assigned those tokens to artificial intelligence and weighted them by its own method. There is no single list of such tokens: the classification provider sets the membership, here Grayscale. So the figure describes one basket over one month, and the tokens inside it rose by very different amounts.
What did Grayscale report?
On October 2, 2026, Grayscale published a note by its head of research, Zach Pandl. According to the note, as reported by Crypto Briefing, the Artificial Intelligence sector in Grayscale's classification rose 54% in September, while the crypto market as a whole rose 24%. NEAR led with a 183% gain. Venice (VVV) added 70%, World (WLD) 47%, and Bittensor (TAO) 37%.
The sector's market value is about $15 billion. It is the smallest of the six sectors into which Grayscale divides the market.
Who decides which tokens count as "AI"?
The provider does. Grayscale maintains its own Crypto Sectors classification and assigns each token to a sector. When the company made AI a separate, sixth sector, it contained 20 tokens with a combined market value of $21 billion, Barchart reported. They included platforms such as Bittensor and Near, infrastructure projects such as Akash, and applications such as Worldcoin.
The sector boundary is a judgment call. NEAR is a general-purpose blockchain that is building infrastructure for AI agents. World works on verifying that a user is human. Another provider could file these tokens under smart contract platforms or identity, and its "AI sector" would then show a different result for the same month.
Why does a small sector produce large percentages?
A $15 billion basket is small next to the whole market, and a move in one large member changes the total a lot. In September NEAR rose 183% and TAO rose 37%. The 54% average matches neither.
Crypto Briefing also notes concentration in time: roughly 9.7 percentage points of the AI tokens' gain came on a single day, September 22. A holder who bought the basket on September 23 would have had a different monthly result.
The same mechanism in another category is covered in "Why does 'the memecoin sector rose 9%' often mean just two or three coins went up?".
Does the provider have a stake in the result?
Yes. Grayscale has run its Decentralized AI Fund since 2024, holding NEAR, TAO, RENDER and FIL. On September 22 the company also renamed its miners equity ETF the AI Compute ETF, Crypto Briefing writes. The research note on the sector's gain comes from a company that sells products on these assets.
The figures are not wrong for that reason, but the author of the classification and the author of the report are the same interested party. The note itself, as summarised by Cointribune, includes a forecast about future "winners" in the sector. An asset manager's forecast is its opinion.
What limits and risks should you keep in mind?
- One month is a short period. September's result says nothing about the months that follow, and tokens that gain tens of percent in a month fall at the same speed.
- A sector figure is not a holder's result. That depends on which tokens were bought, in what proportions and on which day.
- A sector label does not confirm that a project earns revenue from AI. The classification relies on a token's stated purpose.
- Two days before the note came out, the NEAR Intents protocol lost $3.8 million in an exploit, Cointribune points out. Price gains and technical risk exist at the same time.
