Tokenized Gold: What Should Be Checked Beyond the Metal Price

Why a gold token should be evaluated through custody, claim rights, audits, liquidity, fees, and redemption access.

Gold bars in a vault transform into digital tokens through a transparent channel

Tokenized gold is convenient because it gives digital access to an asset linked to physical metal. But analysis should not end with the gold price. The custodian, holder rights, audit process, redemption access, and real liquidity all matter.

Why does the physical asset remain part of the risk?

The token lives on a blockchain, but the gold is off-chain: in a vault, with a custodian, under legal documents. The user receives not “gold in a wallet,” but a digital record that depends on custody, documentation, and operating procedures.

If the link between the token and the metal is poorly described, on-chain convenience does not compensate for legal uncertainty.

Which custody questions matter?

It is useful to know who stores the metal, where it is stored, whether it is insured, how often audits occur, whether bars are identified, and who confirms that tokens match reserves. It also matters whether the token holder can demand physical redemption or only sell the token in the market.

CoinGecko’s RWA Report 2026 shows that the RWA sector contains different asset types and models. For tokenized gold, the custody model is a large part of the trust question.

Why is liquidity more important than a pretty peg?

A token may track the gold price on a normal day, but during stress the trading price depends on liquidity. If the pool is small, the order book is thin, or redemption is expensive, the user may exit at a discount.

It is therefore useful to check not only the oracle price, but also spread, volume, venues, fees, withdrawal time, and minimum redemption size.

How is tokenized gold different from an ETF or a bar?

An ETF may provide regulated access through brokerage infrastructure, a physical bar offers direct ownership, and a token provides a programmable record that can move on-chain. Each route has different fees, rights, liquidity, and operational risks.

The token can win on portability and DeFi integration, but it can lose where a user needs simple legal certainty and physical control.

What limits and risks remain?

Custodian risk, legal structure, audits, transfer freezes, fees, smart-contract risk, oracle risk, and exit discounts remain. The gold price itself can also fall.

Tokenized gold is best seen as a bridge between a physical asset and a blockchain. The bridge’s reliability matters as much as the metal itself.
